Most blocked drains don't happen overnight. They build up slowly, a bit of grease here, some hair there, a few wet wipes that someone swore were flushable, until one Sunday afternoon when you've got twelve people coming for a barbie and the kitchen sink stops draining. We see it every week across Penrith and Western Sydney, and almost every time it was preventable.
The kitchen is where most blockages start. Fat, oil and grease are the biggest culprits, they go down the sink as a liquid but cool and solidify on the pipe walls, narrowing the line every time. The fix is simple: let fats cool in the pan, pour them into an old tin and bin them. Wipe greasy pots with paper towel before washing. It's an easy habit that makes a real difference over time.
Bathrooms cause their share of grief too. Hair and so-called flushable wipes are the main offenders. A cheap plastic drain strainer in the shower costs under five dollars and catches hair before it mats into a blockage inside the pipe. As for wipes, even the ones labelled 'flushable' don't break down the way toilet paper does. Put them in the bin, not the toilet.
Outside, the biggest risk in Penrith and the surrounding suburbs is tree roots. Older homes, particularly the fibro and brick veneer houses built from the 1950s to 1980s, often sit on clay or earthenware pipes that have been there just as long. Roots love the moisture in those pipes and will find any small crack to get in. Once they're in, they grow fast. If you've got established trees in the yard of an older home, it's worth getting a CCTV inspection every couple of years just to know what's happening underground before a root becomes a crisis.
The stormwater pits and grates in your yard need a bit of attention too, especially heading into autumn. Leaves, debris and dirt accumulate fast, and a blocked pit means the next downpour sends water somewhere it shouldn't be. Clear the grates seasonally and you'll avoid a lot of grief when the rain comes.
Grease traps and older pipe diameters in some of the original Penrith homes can mean you're more susceptible to build-up than a newer build. If your drains are slow but not yet blocked, that's your warning sign, don't wait until nothing goes down at all. A high-pressure jet clears a partial blockage quickly and cheaply compared to the emergency call-out when it fully locks up.
