There's one thing that makes every plumbing emergency dramatically worse: not knowing where your main water shut-off is when you need it. A burst pipe or a failed washing machine hose can dump hundreds of litres in the time it takes to work it out. Finding your shut-off now, when there's no water going anywhere it shouldn't be, takes five minutes and could save your floors, your ceilings and a very bad afternoon.
In most properties across Penrith and Western Sydney, the main shut-off is near the water meter, typically inside a small concrete or plastic box set into the ground near the front boundary, often close to the street. It's usually a brass tap or a T-shaped handle. Give it a test turn clockwise to close, then back to fully open. If it's stiff and hard to move, that's worth getting seen to, a valve that won't budge in an emergency is as useless as not knowing where it is.
Apartments work differently. In a strata building, the individual apartment's isolation is usually an inline valve under the kitchen sink or behind an access panel near the hot water unit. The building's main water supply is controlled by the building manager or from the plant room, but your apartment-level isolation is your first response for any leak confined to your unit. Know where that valve is, it's your first line of defence.
Beyond the main shut-off, it's worth knowing the isolation points for individual fixtures. Every toilet should have a valve behind or below it on the supply line. Washing machines and dishwashers have isolation valves behind them. Under every sink there should be isolation taps for hot and cold. These let you shut off water to one appliance without cutting the whole house, useful for a leaking flexible hose or a tap that won't stop dripping without going dark house-wide.
Write down where your main shut-off is and make sure everyone in the house knows. If you're going away for more than a few days, particularly in winter if you're leaving a mountain property unoccupied, turning the main off at the meter is a simple precaution that takes two seconds and avoids coming home to a very unpleasant surprise.
